Why should I care about the Amazon Rainforest?

Founder Cynthia Lucatelli’s father and brothers live in the rainforest of Brazil in a home on stilts which they built themselves over years by hand. So, this subject is personal. Behind every sack of Brazilian specialty green coffee beans is a debt of gratitude to Brazil's most valuable resource, The Amazon.

The Amazon Rainforest is a critically important ecosystem that provides a wide range of benefits to people and to the planet entire. Here are just a few of the many reasons why our precious rainforests matter to you and to future generations.

Climate regulation: The Amazon Rainforest is oten referred to as the “lungs of the Earth” because it produces approximately 20% of the world’s oxygen. It also plays a crucial role in regulating the Earth’s climate by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Biodiversity: The Amazon Rainforest is home to an incredible array of plant and animal species, many of which are found nowhere else on the planet. Protecting the rainforest helps to preserve this biodiversity, which has important implications for human health and well-being.

Indigenous communities: The Amazon Rainforest is home to many indigenous communities that rely on the forest for their livelihoods and cultural traditions. Protecting the rainforest helps to ensure that these communities can continue to thrive.

Global economy: The Amazon Rainforest is an important source of natural resources, including timber, oil, and minerals. Howevre, it is important to ensure that these resources are extracted in a sustainable and responsible way so as to avoid damaging the forest and the communities that depend on it.

Climate change: The destruction of the Amazon Rainforest contributes to climate change by releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and by reducing the forest’s capacity to absorb carbon dioxide. Protecting the rainforest is therefore an important part of efforts to mitigate climate change. This is why Lucatelli partners Labareda do much more than pay lip service. Everyone in the community benefits from the environmental education Labareda provide to the children of Franca. It would be irresponsible to harvest green coffee beans which rely upon the Amazon for oxygen without giving something back in return.

Overall, the Amazon Rainforest is a vital ecosystem that provides a wide range of benefits to people and the planet. It is important to protect the rainforest and ensure that it is managed in a sustainable and responsible way.

This is why Lucatelli’s coffee comes from farms which are certified by Rainforest Alliance and by UTZ for Sustainability.
